A SLAITHWAITE man shoplifted after his prescription for a drug substitute was stopped.

John Carmody, of Spa Field Terrace, admitted at Kirklees magistrates yesterday to stealing a bottle of Jack Daniels from Linthwaite Co-Op on December 13.

He asked for three further thefts from the Co-Ops in Marsden, Holmfirth and Lockwood, to be considered.

Vanessa Schofield, prosecuting, said Carmody had gone into the Manchester Road store wearing a jacket and put his hood up and took the bottle of whisky. He had a number of shoplifting offences to his name.

Last June the qualified bricklayer was sentenced to a community order for six store thefts and this included a drugs rehabilitation requirement.

Mike Sisson-Pell, mitigating, said Carmody’s prescription was stopped for four weeks and he was bereft of money.

Carmody was given a conditional discharge for 12 months and ordered to pay £66 compensation.
