A couple of weeks ago I asked for any old sports photos and Examiner reader Stuart Buckley has got the ball rolling with these two from Slaithwaite in 1949.

The first is Slaithwaite National School who were Colne Valley Football Shield winners 1949.

The team is back row (from left) Brian Cowgill, David Brown, John Gee, Stuart Buckley, Eric Davis, Peter Thompson and John Dalby (headmaster). Middle row (from left) George Gledhill, David Gledhill, Peter Bower, Terence Pickering and Hedley Dawson. Front row (from left) Brian Woodhouse and Philip Gledhill.

Player Stuart Buckley, now 81, recalls the season clearly.

He said: “The statistics were played 8, won 7, drew 1. For 36, against 3. I am now 81 but remember the school team quite well.”

It certainly sounds like quite a team.

The other photo shows Slaithwaite United under 18s in around 1947.

Stuart said: “I am the ‘giant’ goalkeeper on the back row aged 13. Second left on the front row is Les Wild and last on the right front row is Don Robinson. I can’t remember any other names.”

But if you can and know what happened to them contact Andrew Hirst via andrew.hirst@examiner.co.uk

Please send old sports photos – or any nostalgia photos you want to share with Examiner readers – to andrew.hirst@examiner.co.uk

It would be great to have some sent in from the 1970s.
