Winter is kicking back in Huddersfield this week.

An Arctic blast is set to bring sleet, snow and hail to parts of the town over the next couple of days.

And the run-up to the Easter holidays does not look much brighter, with wet and windy weather in between spells of sunshine.

But Huddersfield weatherman Paul Stevens insists: “It’s not unusual”.

The Salendine Nook forecaster said that it was possible to have sleet or hail right up to the start of June.

Mr Stevens said: “We have a lot of cold air from the Arctic over us at the moment and that is keeping temperatures well down for much of the time.

“People may get up to a lovely sunny morning and in the sun it is warm, but there is the chance of a band of showers on both Wednesday and Thursday which could well be wintry in places.

“There is every possibility that we will see some sleet, snow or hail in there and certainly on the high ground, there could well be up to 2cm of snow.

“The temperatures at night could drop to freezing and that looks to be the pattern for the next few days.

“As we head towards Friday and the weekend, the weather will be dominated by winds from the Atlantic and although it will slightly warmer it will be wetter.

“There is no sign of any prolonged dry and warm spell that some have been talking about and although the start of the Easter holidays may be mild, by the time we get to Easter Monday we are looking at bands of rain sweeping in and they could bring some more wintry showers”.

The rain could well bring figures up to near-normal levels, after six very dry weeks in Huddersfield.

The town had only 36mm of rain in February, compared to an average of 60mm, and so far this month we have had only 31mm, which is about half the average.
