Smoke billowing across Huddersfield’s ring road last night came from a small fire at the old Kirklees College site.

A fire started in a small booth on the site, used by security, but smoke from the flames spread quickly.

It prompted numerous calls to West Yorkshire Fire’s control centre and a crew from Huddersfield Fire Station were quickly on the scene at 10.30pm.

The blaze, on the Fitzwilliam Street entrance to the college, was soon under control.

It follows a series of fires at the old college campus earlier this year and firefighters have checked the scene to make sure the college was secure.
