FIREFIGHTERS were alerted after the smell of smoke seeped into a town centre store.

The drama happened at Marks and Spencer on New Street at 11am yesterday but there was no need for the store to be evacuated.

Watch Manager Graham Holroyd, of Slaithwaite fire station, said: "We traced the source of the smoke to the Monsoon clothes shop next to Marks And Spencer.

"We think fluff caught in the heater above the door had caught fire and sent the smell of smoke into the M&S building.

"Any fire had burned itself out and no damage was caused."
