Emergency services were called to a string of crashes across Kirklees as snow blanketed the area yesterday morning.

The worst was a serious accident in Linthwaite just before 8am which left a pedestrian badly hurt.

An ambulance was struggling to get to the scene due to traffic clogging up the roads so the Yorkshire Air Ambulance was called in.

The 38-year-old man – who was hurt when he was in an accident with a Volkswagen Tiguan – was taken to Leeds General Infirmary suffering from facial injuries and a broken arm.

Police have appealed for witnesses to the accident which happened as the VW was travelling downhill and turning right.

A bus blocking the road in Highburton was involved in a string of knock-on crashes on Far Dene.

Paul Johnson, 58, was one of the motorists whose Vauxhall Vectra could not avoid hitting the K-line bus at around 8.30am.

He said: “The bus was coming up the road and it couldn’t get up the hill. It slid back and bumped a gate post which stopped it going further back. It was jutting out into the road at a 30 degree angle.

“I was coming down the road and it was really treacherous. There was nothing I could do as it skidded into the bus.

“There was just the driver on the bus when I crashed. It was going up to Shelley College but two of them got off when it couldn’t get up the hill.

“It was really treacherous. It was just shocking. My driver’s air bag inflated as it struck the driver’s side of the bus.

“It’s written my car off.

“It’s the council’s fault. They’re not gritting the roads properly.”

Paul’s wife Barbara added: “I’m a district nurse and I’ve got to go out tonight and drive these routes and the roads aren’t gritted.

“This is a bus route and it wasn’t clear, of course they’ve been out and cleared it now!”

Elsewhere in Milnsbridge a car had abandoned at Scar Lane Bridge after it had become precariously stuck on the bridge.

And commuters on the M62 could not escape the accidents.

The Highways Agency reported severe delays at around 10.30am on the M62 westbound back to Chain Bar at Junction 26 due to an accident at Milnrow (junction 21).

Two buses also crashed in Blackmoorfoot Road – one of them a school bus. No-one is thought to have been injured.
