More snowfall is predicted for Huddersfield and Calderdale.

As much as 15cm (six inches) fell over the highest parts of the district at the weekend with a covering at lower levels.

Buses up and around Holmfirth were stopped for a time on Saturday due to ice and snow.

Examiner weatherman Paul Stevens said a brisk Polar westerly wind had swept snow showers across the district and more could be on the way.

Saturday night saw the coldest temperatures since March 2013 as the thermometer plunged to -3C and tonight (Sunday) could be colder still.

Met Office-trained meteorologist Paul warned of a severe frost and icy conditions on road and pavements tomorrow morning and said: “People need to take care.”

Paul said Monday would be dry and cold with temperatures only slightly above freezing but the middle of the week could see more substantial snowfall.

“It will start off dry and icy on Tuesday but through the day there is the risk of snow showers spreading from the west and some may well be on the heavy side over the hills.

“There will be a low pressure which could bring more substantial snow into Wednesday.

“There is a lot of uncertainty yet but we could see up to 10cm (four inches) up to 500ft and 15cm on higher ground,” said Paul.

Prospects for later in the week remain uncertain with a battle between milder, wetter weather from the Atlantic and the cold, Polar air.

Paul said there was it was just possible the cold snap could last into next week.
