HARD on the heels of Huddersfield’s starring role in BBC2’s Town series , two local societies are offering an opportunity to explore the history and heritage of the town centre.

Tomorrow will see guided walks around the heritage trail published last year by Huddersfield Civic Society and Huddersfield Local History Society, looking at some of the town centre’s best buildings and explaining the history behind them.

The walks will start at 11am and 1.30pm from the Lord Street side of the open market, towards Northumberland Street, where the Local History Society will have a stall at the Pennine Rotary Club’s annual June fair.

Local History Society publicity officer David Griffiths said: “It was striking how many people commenting on the Town programme said they’d realised how little they knew of the town’s history.

“Here’s a chance to find out a bit more.”

Civic Society chair Chris Marsden added: “Our town centre has so much unique heritage to offer.

“It only takes a prompt to look beyond the modern shop fronts. These walks offer that, with some insight into our past.”

The societies’ town centre trail leaflet has proved very popular over the last year, with almost all the original print run of 10,000 copies now distributed.

A shorter version of the heritage trail, focusing on historic buildings, will be among four new trails to be launched next month by Discover Huddersfield, the community partnership formed to bring new life to the town centre.
