A CALDERDALE school is turning to solar power.

Withenfields Primary School in Southowram has installed 50 square feet of solar panels on its roofing.

This follows the schools participation in ‘Green Day’ where pupils across the country took part in environmental activities.

Headmaster, Duncan Hetherington said the school is moving towards the Green Flag award and the solar cells were a project the children started.

“We will be using them to help in our teaching about sustainability.

“Calderdale Council helped us fund and install the solar panels which we expect will give around £1,000 per year in free electricity.”
