TRAFFIC police worked flat out yesterday after a string of accidents caused by the icy conditions.

Huddersfield’s road policing unit received 20 reports of collisions during the morning as motorists struggled to cope with the freezing temperatures.

Pc Richard Foale said four accident reports on a normal day would represent a busy shift.

But he said many of yesterday’s problems could have been avoided if drivers had used common sense.

“A lot of it boils down to the fact that some people seem to ignore the conditions,” he said.

“When you step outside and it has been snowing, it’s obvious that the roads are going to be icy.

“If people used common sense they would see the roads were dangerous. Some people seem to think they’re invincible.”

Pc Foale said most of the incidents were minor bumps and no-one had been seriously hurt.

His advice to drivers was to leave extra time for journeys, keep to main roads where possible and take account of the extra time it takes to brake in icy conditions – but to avoid driving at all where possible.

“We have had these weather warnings for most of this year, so it shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone.”
