COME forward now if you saw the teatime sex attacker, say police.

Detectives have today made a renewed plea for help to catch the man who carried out a serious sex assault on a 24-year-old woman walking home in Linthwaite.

Police swooped on the area seeking information from potential vital witnesses a week after the attack.

They confirmed this morning that it brought in more information and further lines of inquiry were being followed up today - but they still need to talk to anyone who thinks they may have seen the attacker. Officers were on the bus the victim caught from Huddersfield to Manchester Road at its stop close to Slant Gate.

They talked to people walking dogs in the area and anyone passing by to find out if they had seen anything significant last Wednesday teatime.

In particular they want to speak to anyone who saw either the attacker or his victim.

Det Insp Sam Cooke, of Huddersfield CID, said: "We have had people coming forward with information, but we need to speak to anyone who either saw the attacker or the victim.

"We know the area was busy with people so someone must have seen something."

The victim had travelled home from Huddersfield on an express bus bound for Oldham.

At Manchester Road she got off the bus on and walked up Slant Gate.

She turned left at the top of the steep road on to a popular footpath.

The path runs alongside a wooded area and borders fields and open land where horses graze.

Fifty yards further along the path she was grabbed, taken off the path and seriously sexually assaulted.

The footpath eventually leads to Hazel Grove.

Det Insp Cooke added: "We don't think the attacker was on the same bus as the victim, but can't be 100% sure.

"If anyone saw someone acting suspiciously in the area or spotted any suspicious vehicles I would urge them to get in touch.

"We would also like to speak to anyone who saw the victim.

"She wore a white top, black trousers and carried a pink bag and a denim jacket.

"When the victim got off the bus there was white man who stepped off in front of her.

"We have yet to trace this man so would appeal for him to come forward."

The attacker is a well-built African Caribbean man in his late 20s or early 30s.

He wore a dark blue peaked cap, dark blue jeans and a dark fleece jacket.

Anyone with information should contact Huddersfield CID on 01484 436685 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
