The sound of music filled the Colne Valley at the weekend.

Musical pupils from through the district took part a major festival of music as part of the Huddersfield Regional Festival of the National Festival of Music for Youth at Colne Valley High School.

And with lots of musical talent – there was three sessions each day for pupils to showcase their skills.

It was co-ordinated by Pat France, assistant principal, on behalf of Kirklees Music School (KMS).

Pat said: “There were over 1,000 young musicians taking part from all over Kirklees and beyond.

“There was a world premier of a new piece specially written by the two guitar teachers at Holme Valley Music Centre for their Junior Guitars entitled Tour de Holmfirth.

“It includes some familiar melodies with a twist linked the Tour de France which will be coming through Holmfirth in July.”

As well as Kirklees Music School pupils, Saturday’s talent featured the many bands from Colne Valley schools including the Big Band, string and wind bands performed.

As did the KMS Soul Band, Greenhead College Big Band, Greenhead College Choir, Shelley Music Centre’s Big Band, Intermediate Wind Band and Senior Wind Band, Kirklees Schools’ String Orchestra, Scissett Youth Band, Huddersfield Young Singers and Little Voices.

Sunday’s musical talent featured Kirklees Youth Jazz Orchestra, Colne Valley Boys, Hade Edge Percusssion ensemble, Calderdale Youth Wind Band, the DMA Choir, Elland Silver Training Band, Fernando Teale and “Los Tacos” Mariachi Rockabillies and the Rainbow Connection Junior and Youth choirs.

Regional contests are taking place nationally and some will be invited to perform at the National Festival in Birmingham in July and possibly on to the Schools Proms concerts in the Royal Albert Hall London in November as part of the Music for Youth programme.
