A BRAVE Holme Valley boy has received an award for his courage while battling a severe illness.

Jack Brookes, nine, of Upperthong, has received a Children of Courage Award from Kirklees Mayor Clr Mary Harkin.

The award recognises the bravery Jack has shown since being diagnosed with a brain tumour in August, 2003.

He missed 18 months of school while undergoing several operations, chemo- therapy and radiotherapy.

Although his treatment is continuing Jack has returned to Upperthong Junior and Infant School.

He could not attend the third Children of Courage awards ceremony in September, so Clr Harkin presented his award at the school.

Jack was nominated for the award by his headteacher, Alex Beaumont.

He said: "Jack has shown tremendous bravery throughout his treatment.

"The school is delighted to have him back."
