SOCIAL workers from across Kirklees are to get awards.

They include child protection staff who have faced abuse and threats of violence and a home care assistant who gave emergency first aid.

All will be among those receiving awards at a celebration event on Thursday, October 7, at the Galpharm Stadium.

The event, which marks outstanding achievements by Kirklees Social Services staff will be opened by Kirklees Mayor Clr Mary Harkin.

About 80 members of staff will be presented with awards.

They will include those who gained a recognised training award, achieved 25 years' service with the council and those nominated by management and colleagues for special achievement at work.

Clr Geoff Alvy, the council Cabinet member with responsibility for children's services, said: "The celebration event gives us the opportunity to show our appreciation to our staff - who often work in difficult circumstances - for their hard work, commitment and dedication."

Clr Dennis Hullock, the Cabinet member for responsible for health and social care, said: "The event highlights some of the outstanding work that takes place in social services far above and beyond the call of duty."
