THERE'S nothing more English than a meat pie.

So butcher Andrew Jones - who has shops in Marsh and Brighouse - has created a special one in honour of England's patron, St George.

And students and Scouts in Huddersfield had a hand in its launch.

The pie is now available from butchers' shops and bakeries across Yorkshire - just in time for St George's Day this Sunday.

The pies will continue to be on sale during England's efforts in soccer's World Cup in the summer.

Mr Jones commissioned marketing students from Huddersfield University to research the demand for a product that was quintessentially English.

Their results showed that the public loved a meat pie - and a steak and ale filling would be ideal.

As St George is also the patron saint of Scouts, Beavers and Cubs got the chance to design a poster for the pie.

The winning design was by seven- year-old Beaver James Robinson. The emblem goes on the pie's pastry lid.
