But there is a long drop there down to a stream and as the spectator was chasing the ball he slipped and went headfirst into the stream.

It is understood he suffered serious injuries to his face and hands and suspected broken fingers.

The game was delayed for the best part of an hour due to the ambulance being on the field.

Club secretary Richard Wood said the man was one of the club’s umpires and was allowed home from hospital on Saturday evening following treatment.

He has needed stitches in his facial injuries.
