Ceramic sculptor James Oughtibridge was left disappointed after watching the latest James Bond blockbuster.

It wasn’t the storyline, action sequences or Bond girls that failed to impress – but the editing!

James worked flat out to provide five pieces of contemporary sculpture for the film, Spectre – only to find out that the scenes in which they feature failed to make the final cut.

However, securing the £9,000 commission and delivering the goods to the crew at Pinewood Studios could yet provide a break into the film and TV business for the Holmbridge man, whose work is in demand from celebrity clients and is exhibited and sold in leading London galleries for sums of up to £20,000.

Said James: “The film people Googled me and went to a gallery to see some of my work – then asked if I would be interested in making something for the film.”

James submitted a sample three-foot ceramic sculpture before being told he had secured the commission to produce five ceramic vessels.

“There were a couple of other ceramic artists in the running,” he said. “But the day after delivering the sample to the props department at Pinewood I got a phone call saying I had got the job.

“Then I was then told the news that the work had to be installed by January 14.

“That gave me four weeks to build, refine, dry and fire five big vessels, the tallest of which would be just under 5ft tall.

“There was no room for mistakes and certainly no time to make any spares as back up. The pieces were gingerly placed in the kiln when they were still damp and were fired over three days.”

James delivered the finished pieces to the studios, where he was allowed on set to position them himself.

He said: “The set was character Madeleine Swann’s apartment in the Austrian Alps, but it didn’t feature in the film as much as I had thought.

“It was a bit disappointing, but I am still proud of what I’ve done. They said it was the first time they had commissioned an artist to make a bespoke installation for a Bond film and everyone said they were impressed with my work. Now they know what I can do, who knows where it might lead?”

He added; “Working for Bond was the scariest thing I have ever done, but I hope they come back for future pieces.”

James, who has his studio at The Sculpture Lounge in Holmfirth, began honing his skills on a foundation course at Dewsbury College of Art and Design in 1995 before gaining a BA Hons degree in ceramics at Loughborough College of Art and Design and a masters degree at the Royal College of Art.

Over the years, he has been a visiting lecturer at several universities and colleges and visiting artist at a number of schools, including Brooksbank in Elland.

James specialises in making one-off ceramic sculptures using a technique called “slab building” in which curved sections of clay are constructed to create the finished piece, which is fired in the kiln at 1,240 degrees.

James has exhibited work at venues as varied as the Royal College of Art, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Hampton Court Flower Show, Holmfirth Masonic Hall and Batley’s Red Brick Mill. His work also featured on the small screen with BBC’s Homefront in the Garden.

Recent commissions include creating sculpture for the luxurious presidential suite at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.
