PEOPLE who suffer speech loss following a stroke are being encouraged to join a new self-help group in the area.

The Speakability in Yorkshire organisation is setting up a group in Huddersfield for people who live with aphasia.

The condition leaves people unable to communicate after they have had a stroke.

Group sessions aim to get people and their carers to meet, invite a speaker or enjoy one another' s company.

Development worker Graham Johnson said speech therapists did a wonderful job for people in the early days of their illness or accident.

But when people were left on their own they were often embarrassed and uncomfortable about leaving the house.

Anyone interested can phone Mr Johnson on 01977 796219 for more details.
