Eagle-eyed motorists may have noticed that there are smart new speed cameras in the Kirklees area.

So far they have only been installed in Brockholes, Linthwaite and Birstall but there are plans for them to be sited in Taylor Hill and Heckmondwike.

But ultimately, all the old-style ones placed across Kirklees will be phased out and replaced by rather more high-tech ones.

And the new technology will speed up the penalty fine system for drivers, with erring motorists caught within the hour.

A council spokeswoman said: “The new Truvelo digital cameras work with an auxiliary flash pole and can capture speeding vehicles in both directions simultaneously.

“The cameras send any captured images back to the ticket office in Bradford via 3G technology, every hour.

“The vehicle speed is monitored via piezo sensors in the carriageway and if speeding is detected, the camera is activated.

“The Smart Pole design is more aesthetically pleasing, easier to load and maintain and should be subject to less vandalism and reduced risk of arson attack.”

Previously, operators have had to change film in the cameras.

The new cameras are in place in New Mill Road, Brockholes, and Manchester Road, Linthwaite, with a further one in Birstall.

A further two planned to go in shortly at Taylor Hill and Heckmondwike.

The long term proposal is to replace all the existing cameras over the next few years.

The spokesman said: “As with all speed cameras, the purpose is to encourage drivers to drive safely and respect the speed limits in areas where there have been serious injuries and deaths.

“Drivers will receive advance warning of both the speed limit and that they are entering an enforcement zone.”

Earlier this year the Examiner reported that tackling road safety is to be a big priority for Calderdale Council.

And that could mean more speed cameras and more 20mph zones in places like Brighouse and Elland.

Councillors and officials plan to look at new ways of making roads safer but have also urged communities to get involved.

There are already speed cameras in use on Calderdale Way, Elland, and Elland Wood Bottom, and mobile ones have been used in Elland Road, in Brighouse Road, Brighouse, Halifax Road, Hove Edge, and Stainland Road.

Other new sites are now to be considered. Calderdale has only 12 in total, compared to 40 in Kirklees and 18 in Bradford.
