PASSENGERS caught short at Huddersfield's railway station are being told to spend a penny at nearby pubs.

They are being directed to them because the men's toilets have been shut for a month.

One man complained it was a bit much to expect the pub landlords to help out. But rail operators said they had the full co-operation of the Head of Steam and Station Tavern pubs at the station.

Work is being promised in the new year to get the toilets open again after a pipe became blocked.

Passenger David Robertson said: "It's been shut for four weeks and it's just not good enough.

"They've got all that taxpayers' money and they're expecting pubs to help them out."

Arriva Trains Northern, which runs the station, said pipework and plumbing were needed.

A spokeswoman said: "Surveys are being undertaken and Network Rail will proceed with the work.

"The Head of Steam and the Station Tavern are co-operating with us at this time."
