CONSERVATIVES have called for Kirklees to be split in two.

The Tories believe the controversial plan would lead to better value for money and more democratic control.

Conservatives have also demanded that the electoral wards of Calderdale Council are re-organised.

And the party wants to create a new super-council – taking in South Kirklees, North Kirklees and Calderdale – to share some services.

Kirklees Conservative leader Clr Robert Light and his Calderdale counterpart Clr Stephen Baines will reveal full details of the plan at a press conference in Mirfield on Tuesday.

Clr Kath Pinnock, who leads the opposition Lib Dems on Kirklees, believes the plan will lead to more spending rather than less.

“At a time when we’re trying to save services and children’s centres and mend a few roads and keep Red House Museum open, the Tories have come up with a plan to double the number of chief executives in Kirklees and Calderdale from two to four,” she said.

“I can’t believe they are proposing this, I wonder what planet they are on.”

The Conservative plan would mean a South Kirklees council taking in Huddersfield, the Colne Valley, the Holme Valley, Kirkburton and Denby Dale.

The North Kirklees council would cover Mirfield, Dewsbury, Batley and the Spen Valley.

But Clr Pinnock, who represents Cleckheaton, believes many people would feel no better off if the plan went ahead.

She said: “Sitting here in the Spen Valley, why would I want to be ruled from Dewsbury rather than Huddersfield?”

Clr Pinnock believes Kirklees should be kept as a single council – but with greater power given to the towns and valleys which make up the district.

“What we need for Kirklees is for local councillors to make decisions that affect their areas,” she said.

“The answer is to devolve decisions down to Spen Valley, Dewsbury, Batley, Huddersfield and Mirfield.

“We should be able to make our own decisions about how we clean the streets and mend the roads.

“Splitting Kirklees into two councils – each of which would still be large – would do nothing for that.

“All it does is create two more mega-bureaucracies.”
