A VILLAGE school has been recognised for helping pupils to get totally involved in sport.

A Sportsmark Gold award has gone to Scissett Middle School.

It is the first one presented to a middle school in Kirklees and the first in the district given to a non- specialist sports college.

Head teacher Mick Moriarty said: "We have a large number of staff who are really committed to provide opportunities in sport."

He said teachers worked hard outside school hours to help all 580 pupils become involved in a wide range of activities.

Dance, football, netball, athletics and softball were just some of the activities on offer. Another attraction was a karate club for families.

"It helps in keeping kids involved in school as a place of learning and a place they want to come," added Mr Moriarty.
