A MAJOR £2m revamp for Dewsbury Sports Centre starts next month.

The ambitious plans include new changing facilities, vital work to the plant room and refurbishment of the health suite, reception area and cafe.

Simon Toon, operations manager at Dewsbury Sports Centre said he was confident that customers would appreciate the new-look centre.

"Dewsbury's swimming facilities will be hugely improved by these works.

"We are sorry that we have to close, but unfortunately the nature of the work makes it impossible to keep the pool and wet changing rooms open," he said.

The pool closes on April 4 until late September but other facilities will be open during the work.

The new changing area will be mainly unisex, with individual and family cubicles and provision for people with disabilities.

A separate women-only changing area will have its own showers.

Also included in the plans is the expansion of the health suite area into a larger area with spa pool, new sauna and steam room. In the pool area engineers will be replacing pipework, filters, pumps and the ventilation system.

The poolside area will get new windows, tiling, upgraded pool walls and a redecorated ceiling.

Also included are new facilities for people with disabilities and stylish new cafe to seat 50 people.

Money for the project comers from Kirklees Council with a contribution from Kirklees Active Leisure, a company with charitable status which leases and manages the council-owned sports centres and swimming pool.
