LEISURE centre staff are swapping their sports kits for fancy dress to raise money for charity.

The intrepid group of Huddersfield Sports Centre staff and customers will trek nine miles from Scissett Baths to the Southgate-based centre.

Clad in costumes and walking boots, the team will be collecting cash along the way. The money raised through donations and sponsorship will be given to Kirkwood Hospice.

The Dalton-based hospice needs £9.2m to run its palliative care and support to people with life-threatening illness and their families.

The hike, on Saturday, starts off at 10am from Scissett Baths and anyone can join in.

Lawrence Blackford, gym manager for Huddersfield Sports Centre, said: “We are sticking to the main roads to catch as many people en route as possible.”

Sponsorship forms are available from the hospice and both leisure centres. Alternatively, people can pay £5 to join in on the day.

A prize of three months’ fee gym membership will be given to whoever raises the most.
