AIR cadets from Huddersfield are the best in West and South Yorkshire - and that's official.

Cadets and staff at the 59 Squadron Air Training Corps are celebrating after receiving confirmation they were the outstanding squadron in South and West Yorkshire Wing during 2004.

The Wing Efficiency Trophy was awarded to the squadron for a successful year over a range of disciplines, including overall first place for their sports achievements.

"Everyone here is delighted with the win and it's a just reward for the work that all the cadets in the squadron have put in," said Flt Lt Emma Leech, who is the commanding officer.

The squadron also gained overall second place for exam passes and other academic achievements and third place for its achievements in the Duke of Edinburgh Award and Millennium Volunteer Award schemes and for its performance in the annual rifle shooting competition.

The squadron meets every Monday and Friday evening at St Paul's Street Drill Hall and anyone aged 13 to 16 can join.
