MAJOR roadworks in Huddersfield town centre are going well, says a councillor.

Traffic diversions now in place around St George’s Square will last for the next few months while the street layout is changed.

The work is part of a major redevelopment of the area by Kirklees Council.

The council’s Cabinet member for regeneration, Clr Ken Sims said the work, which started a week ago, was going well.

He added: “We’ve had no aggravation so far, which is good news because there’s no pain without gain.

“Everything is going according to plan.”

The traffic flow round the square will be significantly altered when the work is completed in September or October.

Through traffic will be banned from the square and the existing roundabout outside the George Hotel will be removed.

This will separate Railway Street from the access road outside the hotel, which will become a two-way road providing access to the station car park.

Railway Street and Westgate will be closed to all traffic except buses and taxis and for access.

Part of John William Street will become two-way.

The one-way section of Station Street next to the Britannia Building will be reversed.

Access to the railway station car park will be from John William Street.

Bus stops will also move.

More information will be provided closer to the date when the changes come into force.

The work is part of a £4m redevelopment of the square designed to allow it to stage major outdoor entertainment events with a capacity for up to 10,000 people.

Clr Sims said: “There will be more space in the square, meaning it will be able to host concerts.”
