THE fountains in St George’s Square will be switched back on again on Friday, April 23 – St George’s Day.

The water features were switched off in early December to reduce the risk of ice and damage from cold.

It costs £1,000 a week to maintain the water features, which include jets and a waterfall, as part of the £4m revamp of the town centre square.

A spokeswoman for Kirklees Council said: “The fountains will be turned back on in the Square on St George’s Day, April 23.

“This will ensure the risk of frost is past.”

The nine water jets leading up to the entrance to Huddersfield Railway Station and the 14m-long black granite wall fountain at the bottom of the square are currently sitting idle, although the fountain has been kept free of rubbish over the winter.
