ST MARY'S Church in Honley is sprucing itself up for spring.

After more than 30 years the church is getting a makeover.

Work is well underway to replaster and paint the interior of the building which celebrated its 500th anniversary in 2003.

Over the last four years, churchgoers have been raising the £80,000 needed to undertake the work.

Workmen moved into the church a month ago and are expected to remain there for the next 12 weeks.

Meanwhile services have been held at the Southgate Theatre in Honley while work is completed.

Honley vicar the Rev David Barnes said: "The workmen have been extremely good and have let us into the church from time to time to see how everything is coming on," he added.

He added that this work was part on an ongoing refurbishment of the church which has included new toilets and a disabled access ramp.
