CIVIL partnerships will take place in Kirklees - after weeks of wrangling behind the scenes.

Same-sex couples will be able to take part in ceremonies from today, after a settlement in a dispute involving some register office staff.

Council officials were embroiled in talks with staff as late as yesterday to settle a dispute over staffing the new ceremonies.

At least two couples were planning to go ahead with their ceremonies today.

Several others are pencilled in for the register offices in Huddersfield and Dewsbury over the coming weeks.

Some staff were said to be unhappy about the extra workload.

A Kirklees Council spokesman said: "There have been a series of meetings up to yesterday and we hope the issue is now resolved.

"No other local authorities have considered extra payments because of the new civil partnerships and that was the view in Kirklees.

"We have, of course, agreed that if extra hours are worked then they will be paid at the agreed overtime rate".
