A HUDDERSFIELD stamp collecting club is celebrating its 100th anniversary.

Huddersfield Philatelic Society put on a special display of Edwardian stamps at Turnbridge Working Men's Club, Aspley, where the club meets fortnightly.

The society, founded by the Rev GCB Madden, has traded and displayed stamps of all ages and nationalities.

The club has regular speakers and organises trips abroad.

Trips have included ones to Brussels, Marseilles and Huddersfield's twin town, Besançon which has a philatelic society.

The club will be holding a display at the Tolson Museum in Ravensknowle Park, Moldgreen, from April to August.

Members of the 65-strong club were joined by the society's longest-standing member, Jim Macaskie who joined in 1937.

Club president David Brown said: "I've been interested in stamps since I was a little lad.

"Stamp collecting is an appreciation of design, colour and of the printing workmanship.

"It's interesting to see why the stamp was produced in the first place.

"Quite a few stamps tell a tale of the countries themselves.

"It's a privilege to be a president. Stamp collecting is still a popular hobby. Hopefully we'll continue to recruit members."
