It was the first event of its kind for Mirfield.

But it certainly set the bar high for the future.

Mirfield Arts Festival held its first weekend, with hundreds turning out to make sure the venture was a huge success.

With everything from Indian Dhol drumming to poetry reading, performances and workshops were spread across seven venues both inside and out in the sun.

Other events ongoing included Bronte walks, woodturning demonstrations and a performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Stonham Sunken Garden from a local amateur dramatics group.

Canal boat trips were also offered to the community with charity the Safe Anchor Trust hosting an open marina weekend at Shepley Marina.

To mark the festival’s first year, organisers held the “I DID IT” competition where the public were able to tick off activities they took part in.

The winner was Ann Clough, who visited all the venues and won a lunch for four at Healds Hall.

Organiser Jenny Tomlinson-Walsh said the festival was so successful that performers were already lined up for next year.

She said: “This was our first festival – we were lucky, it was a good weekend weatherwise, we had a good atmosphere, we had a varied selection of artistes and exhibitors all brought together by excellent help from the many, many volunteers – thank you all.

“The comments we’re receiving about the festival suggest that it was a success. People enjoyed themselves and they had a great time.”
