THIEVES have made off with £3,000 worth of steel from a community centre.

Around 40 steel lintels were stolen from Bailiff Bridge Community Centre on Wednesday.

Police say that at around 1pm the steel lintels were delivered to the Victoria Road community centre and placed in the rear car park.

Within an hour these lintels were reported missing.

Sgt Dean Maddocks, from Lower Valley Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Creating the new community centre has brought together many local residents and businesses and a lot of voluntary work is being done to make this a great facility for all the local community.

“The lintels will have little scrap value but may be sold on to local building contractors. I would urge any witnesses to come forward and provide the information which will allow us to recover these items and prosecute those responsible.”
