It was very much a family affair at the University of Huddersfield.

Steve Hemingway and his daughter Amy celebrated success at the double, graduating on the same day with degrees.

And Steve admitted: “It was a very proud day and I managed not to cry”.

Steve, 54, of Slaithwaite, received a Doctor of Philosophy by undertaking a PhD by publication after 5 years of researching medicines management education and training for mental health nurses.

Amy, 21, who lives in Wakefield, picked up a first-class BA honours degree in fashion buying.

Steve, who lives with partner Cath and has another daughter Alice, 19, grew up in Wakefield and spent years working as a mental health nurse in the region.

He then moved into education and now works as a senior lecturer in mental health at Huddersfield.

He said: “It was a lovely day and I felt so proud.

“I managed to get to Amy’s ceremony and she was at mine, and we managed to get a lot of lovely photos taken.

“I have to admit it was difficult not to cry.

“My studies have involved a lot of work with local health trusts and patients and I plan to carry on that work”.

Amy, who studied at Outwood Academy, spent three years at Huddersfield to earn her degree.

She is now looking for work in the fashion buying industry.
