LIGHTNING struck a cherry tree in Dudley Road, Marsh, as a thunderstorm hit Huddersfield.
The lightning strike ripped bark and branches from the tree, but did not bring it down.
Members of the Ahmed and Kareem families, who lives nearby, inspected the damage.
Shanaz Kareem, 30, who lives opposite, said: "I was shutting the bedroom window because of the rain when there was a loud bang. I saw the lightning strike the tree and bits went flying everywhere. It woke everyone in the house and we were just left shaking."
Another resident said: "A lot of people came out to have a look. But I don't think they planned on hanging around too long!"
