THERE could be a storming start to 2007 in Huddersfield.
Weather expert Paul Stevens has warned that the new year celebrations could be hit by gales and rain.
The Salendine Nook meteorologist says winds could reach 60mph or 70mph, and that the worst time could be early on New Year's Day.
Mr Stevens (pictured) added: "We have had several days of calm, settled weather, so the change over the next few days will be really noticeable.
"There are storms building out in the Atlantic heading our way and these should start to arrive tonight and continue over the weekend.
"It will mean a wild night for those planning to go out partying on New Year's Eve."
More rain is expected after a December which has already seen 133mm of rain land on Huddersfield, almost double the usual amount for the month.
Winds gusting as high as 80mph, accompanied at times by heavy rain, are expected to make driving difficult across many parts of the country over the coming days, the Government's Highways Agency said today.
For the past two weeks drivers have had to contend with fog and relatively calm conditions, but with the Met Office now predicting a period of wet and very windy weather leading into the new year, drivers will see a noticeable change.
The Highways Agency, which manages and operates motorways and many A roads in England, urges all road users - especially motorcyclists and drivers of high-sided vehicles - to take extra care.
Rain and spray can reduce visibility and more than double the distance to stop, so drivers are advised to use headlights and keep well back from the vehicle in front.
