THE story behind the restoration of Huddersfield's Beaumont Park will be told on national radio next week.

Presenter Julian Pettifer will be chatting to members of the group who have lovingly revitalised the Victorian grounds.

The Age of The Park is a three-part series exploring the chequered history of urban green space.

The Friends of Beaumont Park will feature next Monday on BBC Radio 4 at 9pm.

Beaumont Park's ornate buildings, steep cliffs and mature woodlands are being lovingly restored by volunteers who started their work in 1998.

John Ross, project manager for the Friends of Beaumont Park, said: "We just had to reverse a sense of neglect. The whole park just looks a lot more tidy."

He said the broadcast was very timely. "The government have just put substantial amounts of money into green space and the restoration of green space in this country and I think a lot of that comes out in the programme," he said.
