AN ELLAND man found badly hurt in a York street died in hospital today.

Andrew Hickox, 42, was discovered unconscious with serious head injuries near Lower Friargate in the city centre in the early hours of Sunday morning.

He died in York District Hospital today just after 2am. A post-mortem examination was due to take place.

In a statement Mr Hickox's immediate family said: "We are very shocked and deeply upset but we are a close family and wish to be left alone for the time being."

Detectives are examining CCTV footage in an attempt to find out how Mr Hickox sustained his injuries.

He had been drinking in Yates' Wine Lodge in the city with three friends. He is thought to have left the pub at around 1am but was found 15 minutes later at the entrance to an alleyway.

Police are keen to trace a group of four men who he was seen talking to before leaving the pub or anyone who saw him in Yates' or Lower Friargate.
