A TWO-YEAR fundraising campaign in Longwood is beginning to see results.

Mums Donna Mitchell and Amanda Hawrot set about the task because there was nowhere for their children to play.

Huddersfield Town striker Andy Booth opened the first phase of the scheme, a new soccer pitch at the Prospect Road recreation ground.

"It's been a community effort. The local fundraising has been magnificent," said Donna, who lives on Prospect Road and is mum to Thomas, five, and Jacob, four.

Amanda, who also lives on Prospect Road, also has two sons, Edward, two, and baby Harry.

Local fundraising brought in £18,000 and the total was matched by Kirklees Council.

Plans for the next stages of the scheme include a toddler playground, an adventure playground for older children and a basketball area.

Work should start in September and be completed in the autumn.
