A HORSE sanctuary which has overcome endless obstacles since it was set up eight years ago may have to close unless significant donations flood in.

Mary Hepworth and her family have helped run Albert’s Horse Sanctuary in Cawthorne, on the Huddersfield/Barnsley border.

But it has been a struggle, from securing enough donations to keep going to difficulties with Barnsley Council which threatened prosecution for building stables on green belt without permission.

And the family ran into trouble with the Charity Commission which removed it from its register after the owners failed to submit their accounts though this was later rectified.

Mary said: “We are in danger of closing if we don’t get £1,000. There are 45 animals here and basically we need help.”

Send donations to Mary at South Lane, Cawthorne, Barnsley, S75 4EF or phone her on 07721 327879.
