A student was raped at a Huddersfield club.

The 20-year-old woman is now being interviewed by specially-trained police officers about her ordeal.

The student told them she was raped on Sunday night or the early hours of yesterday morning.

Police say the incident occurred in a unisex toilet at the Tokyo nightclub in the Old Courthouse on Queen Street in Huddersfield town centre.

The Examiner understands she was forced into a cubicle and raped.

A West Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “The victim is being supported by specially-trained officers and the area was sealed off for forensic examination.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Huddersfield CID via 101 or by calling Crimestoppers, anonymously and in confidence, on 0800 555 111.”

Police are studying CCTV images from the club.

Adele Lord, Tokyo’s area manager and Tokyo’s designated premises supervisor, said: “Student safety is paramount and everyone here is absolutely devastated at this allegation.

“We just hope that the lady is okay and send our best wishes to her.

“We have operated a unisex toilet policy here since we opened seven years ago and have full CCTV in there. We have provided the police with that coverage this morning and have always had a fantastic relationship with West Yorkshire Police.

“We also have a lady or gentleman in the toilets at all times monitoring the situation.

“They have a radio on them and can contact door staff immediately if required.

“Every assistance is being given to Huddersfield CID. Tokyo’s is the official nightclub venue of Huddersfield University and we have dedicated student events every Wednesday night.”

The club opens from 11pm on a Sunday and shuts around 3.30am on Mondays.
