A student has been given a community order after police found bags of cannabis and cash 'strewn around his lounge'.

Leeds Crown Court heard officers were looking for another man on a robbery case on September 12 last year when they saw that man’s brother walk away from a house in Newsome.

They decided to knock on the door as part of that inquiry but when it was opened by Asher Moss they could immediately smell cannabis inside.

A search then revealed £20 notes lying in the lounge along with 'a significant amount of cannabis' which when collected together weighed 1.7kilogrammes with an estimated street value of £8,854.95.

Carmel Pearson prosecuting said the cash found totalled £1,750.

Moss accepted a small amount of the cannabis was for his own use and he said the rest would have been returned to a man from whom he bought his drugs who had left them at his home.

Holly Betke representing Moss said he was only a custodian of the items for a very short time and realised how foolish he had been.

The court heard Moss is in his second year at Huddersfield University after completing his first year in graphic design.

Moss, aged 21, of Cross Lane, Newsome, admitted possessing cannabis with intent to supply and was given a 12 month community order with 240 hours unpaid work.
