Plans have been unveiled for 290 student flats – alongside more than 500 currently being built.

CastleHill Global Capital Holding want permission for an 11-storey block of flats off Manchester Road.

If approved it would be built within the Waterfront Quarter, in between the new Kirklees College building, a block currently being built and the Huddersfield Narrow Canal.

Plans show the imposing block will have communal facilities such as cinema, laundry, gym, sauna, changing and dining room.

The application shows its on land currently owned by Kirklees Council. Last year the Examiner reported that Cabinet members agreed to sell some of its land at the Waterfront Quarter, but due to “commercially sensitive information” it was discussed in private.

The developer, in a statement, said: “The application site holds a key position close to Huddersfield town centre and offers a rare opportunity to produce a high quality development in a central location.

“The scheme proposed represents a unique opportunity for the redevelopment and regeneration of this area providing landmark urban design adjacent to the central area and two of the major routes into the town centre.”

They argue the towering build would be “insignificant” given the scale of the college and student flats already approved.

The metal frame of one of the blocks has been erected and it will eventually become home to 504 student flats.

The site has outline consent dating back to 2008 but the company, which is behind a £2m St Peter’s Street complex in Huddersfield town centre that has recently opened, wants full planning permission for their latest plans.

It is open to public consultation until September 10 at Kirklees Council.

The proposal is the latest for student flats in Huddersfield.
