A student fought to save her handbag when she was mugged in Huddersfield.

The 22-year-old woman managed to cling on to her bag as one man attacked her last night, but lost her grip when a second thug joined in.

She was left with a grazed hand as the pair fled with the bag.

Police said the University of Huddersfield student was walking along Firth Street near the 3M Buckley Centre shortly after 8pm when a man ran up and grabbed her bag.

She held on but the man pushed her to the floor and a second attacker than grabbed the bag.

Both thugs escaped across a footbridge from Firth Street over the River Colne.

Det Insp George Bardell, of Huddersfield CID, appealed for any witnesses to come forward and contact police via 101.

He said: “Firth Street is quite busy with students and traffic and I would urge anyone who can help to come forward”
