HUDDERSFIELD University students have the chance to scrub up and go behind the scenes of a famous hospital.

St James's Hospital in Leeds - made famous by the TV series Jimmy's - is holding an open event for people interested in taking the university's Diploma of Higher Education in Operating Department Practice.

During the open event on Saturday, students will hear from theatre staff, including recently-qualified operating department members.

University staff will be there to discuss details about the course and funding.

There will also be a chance to tour a mock- up theatre and anaesthetic room.

Operating department practitioners provide skilled help to surgeons and anaesthetists in carrying out surgical procedures.

During the two-year course students will spend 12 weeks at the university and 26 weeks on clinical placements at a local hospital each year.

There is a national shortage of operating department practitioners.

Terri Sanderson, matron and theatre manager, said: "This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in a career in theatres to visit the theatre suite at St James's and get a taste of what it's like to work at the forefront of surgical and anaesthetic practice and recovery."
