COLNE Valley High School is to have an imposing sculpture to greet visitors.

The stainless steel sculpture all began with a work experience stint which evolved into a competition and now a permanent statue that will become a familiar landmark.

It began when pupils from the school went on work experience to Steel Dreams in Slaithwaite.

The company makes stainless steel sculptures, garden water features, gates, railings and fences.

It so inspired the pupils they made small models of potential sculptures for homework.

This evolved into a competition among pupils on the GCSE art course to devise a sculpture and it was won by pupil Sara Jones with Lucy Carter the runner-up.

Mr Stott will make Sara's design from stainless steel and also incorporate some of Lucy's ideas into it.

Art subject leader Gillian Markham said: "The final sculpture will be 2m tall and resemble a totem pole with symbols on it.

"The sculpture will be installed in front of the main school entrance during the autumn term."
