Motor vehicle apprentices at Kirklees College raced ahead when they were set an exciting new project.

They had to design a colour scheme and re-paint a Formula One sidecar.

Students Joel Booth, Danny Crowther and Robin King showed they were poles apart when they successfully repaired and refinished the F1 sidecar vehicle with guidance from professionals from EDSB Racing.

And the sidecar that the students refinished – using college colours - will be racing in the British F1 sidecar Championship alongside British Super Bikes championship (BSB).

The students are studying a level 3 advanced apprenticeship in vehicle body repair at Kirklees College’s specialist engineering centre in St Andrew’s Road, Huddersfield.

And as apprentices they are also employed in the motor vehicle trade – Joel works for Grange Moor Coach Works in Wakefield; Danny is at Deanos Motors in Brighouse and Robin at Alton Cars in Huddersfield.

Kirklees College learning and assessment officer Stuart McGregor had formerly raced as a passenger on an F1 sidecar for seven years all over the UK including Brands Hatch, Silverstone and Cadwell Park.

“Having repaired and painted many sidecar fairings over the years I thought it would be a good project for my learners as it covers every aspect of the course criteria,” he said.

A partnership with EDSB Racing was developed through a series of business networking meeting and key industry contacts through staff at the college.

Dan Knight, from EDSB, provided the brief for the students and helped them to develop the project from drawing board to delivery.

“The Sidecar fairings look great and the students have done a fantastic job,” said Dan.

“It’s the first time I have worked with the college. I am really impressed and excited to help young people develop and learn new skills on a project that is mutually beneficial.”
