WILLING volunteers have been hard at work this week, getting ready for tomorrow’s Emley Show.

And no-one has been working harder at the Factory Farm site in the shadow of the famous TV mast than a group of students.

They are some of the lucky young people who have been sponsored by the Show Society to further their studies.

Some are studying to be vets, while others are taking farming courses.

Molly Cundy, the show treasurer, said: “It is something that we have done for the past 10 years, but we have never made a fuss about it.

“We started helping one or two students, but this year we have been able to support 10 young people through their studies.

“We have been able to meet either some of their tuition fees or their accommodation charges and have paid out about £10,000 this year.

“One of them has just graduated from Cambridge in veterinary medicine while another is taking an agriculture course.

“We are delighted we can help. The Society exists to promote agricultural interests and its prime aim is to raise funds to support local enterprises and individuals who meet the criteria of our constitution.

“But at the same time we hope we are providing an enjoyable day for the wider community.”

Tomorrow’s show is the 91st, since the first in 1893.

There have been some years without a show, notably during the First World War, again when foot and mouth caused problems and in recent years because of flooding on their previous Lowfields site.

Now the show is firmly established at its new base close to the mast and thousands are expected tomorrow.

Show secretary Sue Britton said: “We have been very busy getting the showground ready this week.

“We have had showers, but the ground up there does drain well and we hope the weather is brighter at the weekend.

“We could do with a really good day and we have done our best to ensure there is a lot for the whole family.

“We have good entries in all the animal classes and, of course, we have the Top Gear Toyota vehicle here this year.

“The Food Hall we introduced last year proved very popular and is returning and we have a very large number of trade stands.”

The Examiner will be among many organisations taking part, with staff handing out goodie bags.
