FIREFIGHTERS, police officers, soldiers airmen and Huddersfield Giants rugby league players helped to prepare Fartown High School students for the world of work at an industry day.

Representatives of 16 jobs spent the day at the school and worked with small groups of students.

Youngsters from Year 11 are seen working as a team to build a tower from straws, watched by RAF pilot Flying Officer Andre Kerr.

Mrs Hilary Fletcher, a teacher responsible for industrial links, said: "We hope it will prepare them better for work by getting them to work as a team, to take on responsibility and to solve various problems."

Altogether, 112 Year 11 students took part in the various exercises.

The day was organised by training organisation Compact Education and Business Services and the school.
