HUDDERSFIELD University has submitted the official plans to turn a former nightclub into a theatre and media studies centre.

It wants to change the former Eden nightclub and Milton buildings in Page Street into the centre.

The building is listed and in a conservation area.

Phil Williams, of the university, said the work would be completed in two stages, if Kirklees planners gave the go-ahead.

The Students' Union will use the Milton part of the complex until the area which used to house the Eden nightclub is refurbished as drama studios and teaching space.

This project will be completed by December next year.

A new £4m Students' Union building will be completed the same month.

When the new building is in use work will start on changing the Milton building into drama studios and teaching space, with a completion date of September 2005.

The university is also planning to add an extension to its West Building, to house its media studies courses.

The work will provide state-of-the-art studio space, staff offices and teaching space

Kirklees officials will decide in the next few weeks whether to approve the plans.
