A stunning sunrise above Huddersfield heralded the start of a spell of mild weather.

There were shades of pink and gold in the skies at dawn and it’s all down to the sun’s rays being reflected off ice clouds.

But that ice is set to be the only hint of winter, according to Huddersfield weatherman Paul Stevens.

He predicts the rest of November and the early part of December is set to remain very mild, although a little wet and windy at times.

Wow...

Mr Stevens said the spectacular sunrise captured by photographers across the area was a sign of a brighter day.

“The Jet Stream is powering through at 220mph some 28,500 feet above us and it is pushing cirrus clouds in front of it.

“Those clouds have ice in them and the sun’s rays are reflected off the ice, giving us the amazing sunrise we saw today.

“We are set for a spell of low pressure from the Atlantic, which can only mean as we move into December mild or very mild weather, wet and at times stormy with only cool interludes of a day or so.

“Any snow and frost should be restricted to the Scottish Hills as colder air manages to creep south.

“For much of England and Wales if it’s cold you like you will be disappointed through the first half of December and perhaps all the way up to Christmas.

"Indeed some of the signals keep it very mild into January with high pressure building strongly across most of southern Europe by next week pumping up exceptionally mild air towards the UK next week.

“Today will be rather cloudy with bright rather than sunny spells and a general thickening of cloud, with dribs and drabs of mostly light rain and drizzle. It will stay cool, around 7°c in a moderate NW breeze.

“Thursday once again will be rather cloudy with bits of rain and drizzle at times, and perhaps the odd heavier burst over the hills. Temperatures will be around normal or slightly above in moderate north west winds.

“Friday will be rather cloudy and mild to start but it will become very windy with some heavy and squally rain through the evening rush hour.

“The rain will clear later in the evening as it turns briefly much colder”.
